Diwali or Deepawali means a row of lamps. It is an important Hindu festival. It reminds us of the ideals of Rama. On this day Rama with Lakshmana and Sita returned to Ayodhya from exile. The people kindle earthen lamps to greet theme. It is a festival of joy and merry making.
It comes off in the month of October and November. Houses and shops are white washed. They are nicely decorated. Beautiful pictures are hung on the walls. Temples look like newly married bride. The sweet sellers also began to prepare sweets days before the festival. The businessmen open their new account on this day.
On this day people put on new clothes. They go to the bazaar. They buy utensils, fruits and many other things. Children buy toys and crackers. Everybody looks happy and gay. Gifts are exchanged with friends and relatives.
At night, there is light everywhere. People light lamps and candles in rows. Children play with fire works. At night, people worship Laxmi, the goddess of wealth. They pray for health, wealth and prosperity. Some foolish people gamble on this day. It is an evil practice. It should be stopped.
